Catch the Spirit of GWHS

When the word spread that the Greenville-Weston High School’s Basketball teams, both the Hornets and the Honeybees, were playing for the State Tournament Championship, a crowd of loyal fans quickly made plans for the Jackson showdown.  Approximately 1500 Delta fans hurriedly filled the stands of the Coliseum for the Class 5A championship games, while others were glued to their television sets until around 11 p.m.  It was obvious that the community had embraced the coaches and the basketball teams.  Fans of Greenville-Weston High School (GWHS) wanted to experience “history in the making” first hand.  Since the merging of Greenville High School and T. L. Weston High School, this was the first time the Greenville-Weston High School played in the MHSAA state basketball tournament.  As a single entity, the last state championship was won by Greenville High School in 1972 and by T. L. Weston High School in 1998 and 1999, respectively.  This year, the Hornets and the Honeybees of Greenville-Weston High School were bidding for a state championship.

Watch the Show of GWHS

The Hornets and Honeybees of Greenville-Weston’s performances were spectacular!  It was obvious that Coach Stovall and Coach Watson had prepared the players for the challenge.  In front of a full house, the GWHS delighted the crowd bucket after bucket.  “Greenville-Weston team showed the crowd what kind of talents we (GWHS) really have,” stated with pride by one sophomore student.  Another student eagerly added, “Our team wanted to win and showed the crowd that GWHS was for real – Greenville-Weston is the future, and we will be back for our trophy.”

Double-Overtime

The game between Provine Rams and the GWHS Hornets was close throughout with each team making little runs that were answered time after time.  Each player stepped up in the Class 5A boys’ championship to lead the game into double-overtime.  Without a doubt, Coach Watson has touched these students on and off the basketball court.  Coach Watson’s motto is “Togetherness” and he encourages “leadership skills through performance.”  He believes that discipline is imperative.  He focuses on the “whole” student, and each of them must “do right” by putting first things first – excel academically, demonstrate acceptable behaviors and exhibit mature social skills.

Talented Players

Pressure is an interesting force.  The girls of GWHS (22-12) appeared oblivious to the pressure of playing the Lady Mustangs (31-1) of Murrah, ranked as No. 5 nationally by USA Today.  Although the top-ranked Lady Mustangs were playing for their second straight 5A girls’ championship, the Honeybees just kept pushing.  As Coach Stovall would say, a true Honeybee “never let it rest until good gets better and better gets even better.” When asked how does he feels about the accomplishments of the Honeybees, Coach Stovall replied by saying, “Pleased but not satisfied.”  This has been Coach Stovall motto throughout the season.  With his sincerity in moving the team from just good to great, he constantly motivated the girls to press on to the next level in each game.

The Bang

Although GWHS basketball teams did not bring the trophies to Greenville, the fans of GWHS appreciate their accomplishments.  Many fans are just proud to be associated with the talented teams of GWHS.  As the fans would readily say, “How many teams even get to play for a state championship?”  It is not really easy to do, especially in the larger classifications.  Yet, the Hornets and the Honeybees of GWHS ended their season with a bang!
