Mission

The mission of Greenville Public Schools is to provide all students with a quality education that adheres to rigorous and challenging standards so that they will experience success and become productive members of society.

The mission of the Greenville Public Schools' security department is to facilitate the development and maintenance of a comprehensive security and safely program designed to foster an environment wherein students, educators, parents, and others legitimately on school district properties can function without fear of personal violence, harassment, anxiety or hatred, while working together to educate all children for all times.

During the 1999-2000 school year, the Greenville Public School Districts' Board of Trustees created the position of chief of security. Members selected Marvin Minor, former Chief of Police for the City of Greenville, and instructed him to undertake a total upgrade of the district's security program.

Under Chief Minor's leadership, security personnel received multi-faceted training in areas such as search, anger management, first aid, CPR, and other subject matter designed to enhance a safe learning environment for the district's students, teachers, and parent population. That training continues on a regular basis. The chief of security also conducts similar training sessions for employees during staff development at district school sites.

All sites received an initial security assessment and continue to be periodically re-evaluated for improvements and compliance. Each of the district's 17 campus sites follows and practices well-planned procedures for emergency situations. Secondary school sites at Greenville-Weston High School's two campuses, Coleman and Solomon Middle Schools, and Garrett Hall Alternative Learning Center operate video surveillance systems. These systems have had a profound impact on campus security and overall site management by principals.
