Formula for Success is an early childhood literacy program that provides a real birthday present in the form of books, book marks, and tiny tee shirts with the "Formula for Success" logo. The program is administered through Stern Enhancement School. Representatives hand out the materials at no cost at Greenville hospitals to expectant moms, babies, and children. An average of 50 give-aways are made each month. The free materials are also handed out at local health fairs, since literacy is a health issue in the Delta. The program was first funded by the Greenville Public Schools Board of Trustees. Since 2000, a grant from the Barksdale Institute has helped defray costs. Books are purchased from Scholastic Publishing Company. |
