The Principal of Ella Darling Elementary School, Arthur Johnson, has
earned the district's top administrative honor, Administrator of the
Year for 2008. It is obvious that Johnson has a passion for teaching
that enables him to be an effective instructional leader. His day-to-day
actions often demonstrate that his daily motivation is his love for the
children. "The fulfillment that I get daily when I know that I have
touched a child's life is immeasurable," says Johnson.
When asked how he views his job as a school principal, he stated, "I
view the my job as a service-centered career that provides opportunities
for me to make a difference in the lives of teachers, children, their
families, and ultimately, the entire school community. Being able to
improve the quality of life for families in our community is the most
rewarding thing that I could do."
Johnson has been with the district as an administrator for five years.
He has served as the instructional leader at Julia L. Armstrong
Elementary School and Ella Darling Elementary School. He received his
undergraduate degree from Millsaps and a master from Ole Miss and Delta
State.
What makes Johnson so unique is that he sees himself as a "work in
progress devoted to improving the lives of children." One of his goals
is to inspire others to lead in education. That is, to encourage leaders
"who will excel beyond their own capabilities and make a tremendous
impact on the lives of children," according to Johnson. He believes that
the only way that this can be realized is "through the work I do each
and every day."
Mr. Johnson appreciates the support of Superintendent Estes Taplin and
the form Superintendent Arthur Cartlidge for giving him the opportunity
to be an instructional leader. He credits his perseverance to his
parents back in Pinola, MS who instilled a hard working and humble
spirit that guides the way he interacts with teachers, parents,
colleagues, and people in general. Johnson also acknowledges his
supportive wife, Leneatra, and his two sons, Kolby and Kameron, for
their understanding of his commitment as a school leader. |
